Aftermath of deadly floods in Nairobi’s Mathare slums
On the evening of Tuesday, April 23rd, 2024, and continuing into Wednesday morning, a flood disaster struck Mathare, severely affecting many residents living near the Mathare valley. The devastating floods swept away houses and belongings, leaving numerous people without basic necessities. Among those affected were five MCFP staff members, 44 teenage mothers benefiting from our economic empowerment program, and 84 school scholarship recipients.
Their families were left in dire need of essential items to help them recover from this traumatic event. Fortunately, MCFP friends, partners, and well-wishers donated food baskets, clothes, bedding, baby diapers, sanitary pads, school uniforms, books, and other personal items.These donations have greatly helped boost the affected families’ ability to cope with the aftermath of the disaster.
